Explore one of Japan's most beautiful original castles. Discover the unique black architecture and the history of the samurai who guarded it.
Matsumoto Castle: The Black Crow of Nagano
Unlike many of Japan’s castles which were rebuilt with concrete, Matsumoto Castle is an original wooden structure finished in the late 16th century. It is famous for its black exterior, earning it the nickname “The Crow Castle.”
Architectural Features
The castle features a rare “Moon Viewing” turret (Tsukimi-yagura) added during a time of peace, showing how even military structures adapted to aesthetic pursuits. Inside, the steep wooden stairs and secret floors remind you of its defensive purpose.
The View
With the Japan Alps in the background, it is one of the most photographed castles in the country, especially during cherry blossom season.
Conclusion
Matsumoto Castle is a stunning example of samurai-era architecture that has survived wars, fires, and earthquakes for over 400 years.
