Mount Fuji Climbing Guide: Conquering the Peak

Everything you need to know about climbing Japan's most iconic mountain. From gear to the 'Goraiko' sunrise.

Mount Fuji Climbing Guide: Conquering the Peak

“He who climbs Fuji once is a wise man; he who climbs it twice is a fool.” This Japanese proverb summarizes the grueling but rewarding experience of ascending the 3,776-meter peak.

The Season

The climbing season is short: from early July to early September. Outside of this time, the mountain is dangerous and the huts are closed.

The Routes

The Yoshida Trail is the most popular, with many mountain huts and facilities. The Fujinomiya Trail is shorter but steeper.

The Experience

Most climbers start in the afternoon, stay in a mountain hut for a few hours of sleep, and then summit in the early morning to see the Goraiko (aurora-like sunrise) above the clouds.

Conclusion

Climbing Fuji is not about the view from the top (which is often just white clouds), but about the endurance and the shared spirit of the thousands of others on the trail.
